Situation 1: Asking about Thai culture

A:  I have noticed that your students are very well-behaved. I wonder how you have taught them to be such good students.

B:  Apart from teaching them academically, we also teach them how to treat other people. For example, we always remind our students to ‘Wai’ teachers and visitors. ‘Wai’ is the Thai word for paying respect, particularly for elders. When the students ‘Wai’, they have to put their hands together and bow their heads down. ‘Wai’ is also a common greeting, and it is a way to express politeness.

A:  Wow, that’s interesting. Could you teach me how to do that?

B:  Yes, absolutely.

Situation 2: General information about MWITS

A:  What time does school start and end each day?

B:  The school day starts at 8 a.m. and finishes at 4.10 p.m. If students join a club, they will finish around 5.05 p.m.       In the morning, we have an assembly during which students sing the national anthem, listen to announcements, and meet with their homeroom teachers. The assembly starts at 7.20 a.m. before the first class which begins at 8 a.m.

A:  That sounds like a long day, doesn’t it?

B:  Yes, but everyone is used to it. And our students enjoy studying!

A:  I can see that they do. They seem to be carrying books everywhere they go.

B:  That’s typical for MWITS students.  They love to learn!
